17-year-old Adri Mehmeti is rapidly establishing himself as a rising talent in American soccer. Having become a regular midfielder for the New York Red Bulls, he also debuted for the US national soccer team last September. His rise is seen as a significant achievement for the new generation of American soccer.
Mehmeti has proven his abilities for both club and country in a short time. His confidence, discipline, and game understanding on the field at a young age have made him one of American soccer's most promising players.
Typically, experienced players handle the role of defensive midfielder in the center of the soccer field. However, Mehmeti is showcasing his skills in this challenging position. His style of controlling the ball under pressure, dictating the game's tempo, and playing with the ball even in difficult situations has caught the attention of coaches and fans.
Passion for Soccer Since Age Two
Both of Mehmeti's parents are from Albania. His father also played soccer in his youth and represented his country's youth team. Influenced by his father, Mehmeti started playing soccer at a young age. 'My father is my biggest inspiration, both on and off the field,' he told CNN Sports.
According to him, he started playing ball with his father around the age of two. Playing soccer with his father every day in the small open space behind their house increased his interest in the sport.
'I became more attracted to the game every day. As I grew up, I realized that soccer was what I wanted to do. It was my dream,' he said.
Although many children growing up in America prioritize basketball and baseball, soccer has always been central to Mehmeti's life. He says he still spends time with the ball when he is at home.
Joined Red Bulls Academy at Age 10
Mehmeti's talent was evident from a young age. In 2019, at around 10 years old, he joined the New York Red Bulls Academy.
At the academy, he continuously improved his game by progressing through various levels according to his age group. He says that despite new challenges at each new level, the support of the coaches and the clear opportunity to reach the main team helped him move forward.
